Fall Cleaning

Fall Cleaning!
It is Friday and my lesson to myself is to be organized.  Yes, organized -- well, sort of organized.  It is time to clean out my studio, and even more importantly, my paints and old brushes that I have been hanging on to.
I throw away more paint than most people use -- I have a large glass palette and I like to use a lot of different colors -- and, I usually add a new color just for the fun of it.
When I am painting, I don’t like to take time out to put more paint on the palette, so when I run out of a color, I tend to throw the tubes (without the caps on) on top of my palette - I am in a hurry and I am painting -- I certainly don’t have time to stop and put the cap on the paint and put it back into the drawer -- so I throw them on the corner of my palette.  And when the pile gets too high, I throw them in boxes.  When I am creating, I can't stop and organize!!!  I am in the moment and want to stay there!!!
If you do not have a tube wringer -- run out and get one -- get the metal ones as they will last forever.  This saves you a lot of money on paints.  And when they get down to the very bottom of the tube, I cut the bottom off and squeeze the daylights out of the rest of the tube!  This is similar to what Wayne Dyer does to his family’s toothpaste -- he talks about squeezing out every last drop!
And, thus, there are lots of remnants of paint tubes that have been sitting around in my studio, which when I clean my palette, I throw in  boxes!  These are great paints, some are very expensive, and some are not.  Needless to say, I am not throwing them out!   Sooooo -- I have decided that I have to use up all of these paints before I purchase any more colors -- except for the cadmium yellows and reds!

Now, just in case you don’t think that I am organized -- well, in some ways I am.  I keep my paints stored in bins and marked with colors.  I usually buy my paints in bulk; however, this past year, I have only been buying them a few tubes at a time at the local art store, Arizona Art.

And, although these drawers, which are directly under my palette, presently look messy -- they are actually color-catagorized -- and I will be cleaning them up too!  Yikes -- looks like there is some major cleaning happening here!

This is indeed a challenge for me -- an economical challenge -- and a painter’s challenge.  You can email me your ideas -- mine is to pull several tubes out of the boxes each day and put them on my palette and use them -- I have already started and have found some colors that are magnificent to use and mix with my other colors.
Let’s see how this translates into my paintings -- I am sure that this challenge will be fun and with the money that I save not buying more paints, well, I guess a good bottle of wine will do!
The challenge is on!
Next week, I am going to clean my garage!

Painting From Life

Okay, it’s Monday, the start of a new week.  How exciting that is!  I just finished a two-day workshop at Arizona Art Supply here in Phoenix and it was so much fun and a great learning experience for all of us -- especially me.  There is nothing finer than painting from Life -- there is no equal to having a model right in front of you!  You can see all of the colors of the skin, the curves of the face and the way that the light hits the dress and the flowers.  And, it is right in front of you in three dimension and that is what you are painting.
I have made an agreement with myself that I will be painting from life at least once a week and drawing from life at least once a week -- the easiest way to do this is to paint a stiff life.  And. so having a model is so special because it takes a very special person to sit still for four hours (with little breaks) to pose.  It is an honor, and I am so grateful to my model, Lori, for posing for us.
Yes, painting a model is indeed challenging, and yet, that is how you grow and learn -- and that dates back to the Rembrandt days -- way before photos were even a thought.  Even the Impressionists used live models in their studios or should I say ateliers!
I will be writing about this workshop and the beautiful lessons that I learned on my web site and here on my blog -- I know that I learned so much this weekend and I am very grateful for all of these lessons.  Plus, painting on other people’s canvases is so much Fun -- it’s a freedom that perhaps we do not allow ourselves on our own canvases.
So, today on Monday, I am painting in my studio with a new found spirit of energy that puts a huge SMILE on my face.

Taking a Leap

Where would you be today if you had let your fears stop you?
Think of the times when you were nervous to do a painting or try a new technique -- did you stay in your comfort zone, or.... did you find the strength to forge ahead and take a leap?
We grow when we leap -- and then we find out that it wasn’t that scary after all -- how simple that is!
Here’s to taking big LEAPS today in all areas of our lives!  Here’s to finding Bliss!

Friends

Isn’t it amazing that people just “walk” into our lives -- then they are a part of our life and we wonder “how did I ever live without them?”  They are your friends and they love you for being You.  They love you for who you are and they are there for you when you need them the Most.
I treasure my friends, my sister,s and my family.  I know that they love me even when I have forgotten to love myself.
Each day I remind myself to smile as I walk into a store and especially while driving around doing errands.  Drivers have a tendency to look so Serious -- Now, I just smile, knowing that my life is great -- my life is filled with great friends and family and I am so blessed to be a painter.  I am very grateful.
Are you smiling?Sketching is a way of practicing for painting ideas and a way of honing your skills for painting and sculpting.  I keep a sketchbook beside me all of the time to put down new ideas that come to me throughout the day.

Painting From Life

It is amazing how much more energy there is in a painting when you paint from life!
The best way to paint is from life -- the colors, the form, the essence of what you are painting is right in front of you -- and.... you paint faster -- there is no doubt about it.  I am honored when I have the opportunity to paint a model in my studio or in my yard, and I find that the energy that goes into the painting is so exciting and I can paint so much faster when someone is watching!  Why is that?
So what am I doing with all of those long hours that I am putting into my other canvases?
I have vowed (once again) to paint from life and draw from life at least once a week.
I did this little study in my studio to practice for my Painting Demonstration held at Arizona Art Supply on Saturday.  This is a 20 x 16 and I only had thirty minutes to paint it!
And voila!

Marvelous Mondays

It’s Marvelous Monday -- again!  The sun is shining, the children are out of school, and life is great!
As an artist, it is a privilege to have a collector commission a painting.  It is the greatest honor that you can give an artist -- especially when they just let you do the painting from your heart.
Some paintings take a little longer than others -- I like to keep them around to look at them and put extra loving touches on them.  This is a painting for a very special friend of mine who saw his daughters in another painting of two women on the beach.
I created this painting on a linen Raymar Board!  The colors are so bright and beautiful and the feeling of two women enjoying one another as they dance into the water is what I wanted to capture!
Here’s to Summer Days and dancing into the ocean with your friends!

Fantastic Friday

Fantastic Friday is here!  And here in Phoenix it is the last day of school and the children are in sheer delight!  Yeah!  Do you remember what the last day of school felt like -- you were free -- summer was here and you had all of these great plans!  You would jump out of bed with expectations of another “summer day”!
Here’s to Summer Days every day when we jump out of bed with delight and awe of what the day will bring!

The Garden

As you open the gate -- you are at Peace.
Your senses feel the colors of love.
A Garden that has grown all season,
Created by hands that never wear a glove.
It’s my place to go to see the colors of light.
And feel the magic of nature all around me,
From tiny seeds to living creatures,
one can only recognize-- how magical God can be!

Loving Compliments

The other night, a very elegant and venerable man that I met  told me that I was a beautiful woman!  Those words certainly put a smile on my face, and  definitely gave me a loving compliment that I have been thanking God for all day long -- it must be those raw almonds that I am eating.
When you look at everything and everybody with loving eyes,  you do see the beauty.  When you are painting or see someone else’s painting, use your loving eyes -- see the beauty!
Our world is full of criticism -- we don’t need any more -- wouldn’t it just be so much better to give compliments to yourself and others.   Step back from your painting, take a break and look at your work with those loving eyes, and the parts that do not work or need a little help will show up for you.
It feels so great to receive compliments -- Give yours freely, and watch the smiles that you receive in return.

Starting to Paint

It’s never too late to get started !!!  I see a lot of retired people taking workshops and opening the door to painting!  That is so exciting to me because I do believe that we all have art in us!  Finding your medium and your style is part of the process!
Taking workshops is a great place to get started.  When an artist does a demonstration you can learn a lot by just watching.  And, some artists offer private lessons.  You can learn so much in a workshop -- you learn about yourself and you get to interact with other people who also want to learn to paint.
Seek out the art groups in your area and find an artist whose work you admire and sign up -- take that first step and start to paint or draw -- you will discover that part of you that has been waiting to shine!
I will be doing a demonstration at Arizona Art Supply in Phoenix, Arizona on May 22, 2010, and I will be shooting a video of the demonstration that will be available at the end of this month.  To find out more, please send me an email.
Remember -- it’s never too late to get started!
